The Department of Anthropology was established in 1939 by the late Dr. (Mrs.) Iravati Karve, one of the finest anthropologists in the country. In the earlier phases the Department was functioning as a combined Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the activities were primarily focused to research. Subsequently teaching in anthropology at the post graduate level was introduced in 1963. Bifurcation of the combined department occurred in 1977, and an independent department of Anthropology was established with a view to provide greater autonomy so essential for the development of teaching and research.

This is the only department in the State of Maharashtra, offering anthropology at the Post Graduate level.  The Department endeavors to extend anthropological knowledge and field data for wider applications in various fields of human action and encourages humanitarian considerations in policy decision and implementation. We strive to conduct teaching, research and extension with the view that Anthropology as a discipline is “most scientific of the Social Sciences and most humanistic among the sciences”. With its holistic and interdisciplinary perspective we study conditions of human existence and human endeavors and aim at serving society professionally.

The department has maintained an equal emphasis on Biological Anthropology as well as on Cultural Anthropology. It was one of the first departments in India to introduce courses on Urban Anthropology, Medical Anthropology and Social Science Research Methods Practical.
